What is the qucikest and most reliable breaking news alert service?

I use Yahoo Breaking News alerts but want something that is more customizable and faster. Is there a service that sends out email alerts on top stories from around the world that focusses on real issues? Not entertainment or sports news but something like The Economist or Time Magazine ?
